Ibis
heb |
The sacred ibis, Threshkiornis aethiopicus,
appears in Egyptian art depicting river and marsh scenes as well as in
symbolic works as the bird identified with Thoth, the god of the moon
and patron of scribes and writing. Thoth was often portrayed with the
head of an ibis and in some cases the bird itself was used to represent
him. |

Isis Knot
tiet |
The origin of the Isis knot is unknown but it was perhaps
a variant of the ankh symbol.
Indeed it is often translated as "life" or
"welfare". The sign is used decoratively in combination with
the ankh, djed
and later the was scepter. The tiet
came to be connected with Isis, perhaps because of its association with
the djed pillar. The two symbols
were used to allude to Osiris and Isis and the binary nature of life
itself. |
